Movies in the Park

4 July 2016
My Experience

During my summer in Washington I was able to do lots of work for Bainbridge Island Metro Parks and Rec Department. Although I was unable to be around for the implementation of the Movies in the Park, I was able to help in the advertising beforehand. Movies in the Park is just one of the many summer series BIMPRD offers its community during Washington's most beautiful months. At the beginning of July I helped BIMPRD by passing out their flier, which is shown below, to local businesses. This was a really cool experience for me because I am not accustomed to having to talk to business owners or managers and ask them to promote an event for another organization. I think this opportunity was a good way for me to not only work on my soft skills, but also a crucial lesson in learning how important soft skills are in every aspect of life, but especially event planning. A lot of event planning has to deal with asking others, whether its volunteers or donors or staff, to help. I think having the kind of people skills it takes to ask for help is an uncomfortable and essential endeavor for event planners. This menial task opened my eyes to learning these kind of skills, but more importantly showed me that I need more practice.
